Re-watched this with my son. I’ve watched it maybe 10 times. I still really wish this was a better movie. It has some really good ingredients. The dialogue and the cheesiness just really irks me still every time I watch. Yet, as a Star Wars fan I can still muster a 3.5 ⭐️review. There is good movie buried deep in this material someplace.

I've always liked The Phantom Menace. Looking at it now, I'd say its major flaw is that it's basically all preamble for what's to come and is effectively somewhat insubstantial as a standalone film. The upshot is basically: the trade routes are opened, Qui-Gon dies, and everyone else meets each other. There are so many incredible things about this film. The sound design is some of the best ever, the lore is beyond fascinating, and the final battle with Maul is phenomenal. I’m struggling to articulate what I’ve experienced now. The action and horror are two genres that are quite tough to breakthrough the boundaries, whilst the latter is being showered with appreciation and love lately, action is still trying to finds it’s stand. I think it’s safe to say Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have created something marvelous that every action or film buff should embrace with all their heart. The have cemented the foundation even stronger.
