"I should be seen, not hid."

Some tears rushed out of my eyes during the transitory supermarket scene, where upon enthusiastically finding the Dottie magazine, Stevie's mother gladly places it on the conveyor belt to be purchased with no further questioning or hesitation, just shared enthusiasm for her son's own.

It's a minor detail to the larger framework Haynes constructs, but its just so wholesome man. :')

These faces, these voices. Oh how familiar and naïve they were. It seemed like the finality of life then, when it was barely just the beginning. Horrifically real but beautiful. Few films nowadays genuinely pique my curiosity as to how they were achieved and Frederic Da's film manages to be one of those rare cases for me. I'll be learning from this one for a future planned project of mine.

My first true film love of 2021.
