Luke Pauli’s review published on Letterboxd:
Fun. This is the word I most associate with comic books, when I think back to my youth, but it's a word that is often lacking from comic book movies. Not with James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy though, which has fun running through its core like words through a stick of rock. Marvel Studios' riskiest film to date, with an obscure selection of comic characters, no real star names behind or in front of the camera, two of its main characters are a tree and a raccoon!; fuck all that though because Guardians of the Galaxy is incredible, from start to finish. I love the casting choices: Chris Pratt as the unlikely hero is hilarious, as is big Batista as Drax, every role is filled out superbly, I love the tone, completely tongue in cheek, aware of its preposterousness, not afraid to embrace it and be absolutely batshit crazy. It's funny, it's action packed, it's sweet and touching. Did I mention it's funny? The chemistry between the leads is great. It's just pure fun, like Star Wars Marvel style. The closest a film has come to replicating the experience of reading a comic book. My smile may have to be surgically removed. Avengers 2 has big shoes to fill. I haven't even mentioned the brilliantly cheesy soundtrack! Just go watch it if you haven't already.
