Best Of 2021

So this was my first time back in my church/synagogue - an actual theater - in over 16 months. I went by myself on opening day in the afternoon as I used to do and it was an overwhelmingly emotional experience. As the lights went down and the previews began I was overcome with emotion. Like legit tears on my fucking cheek emotion. I had suppressed just how much I had missed this, just how much the deprivation had hurt. Sure, I have a sweet, sweet home theater set up but it's just not the same thing as the feeling you get sitting in a theater with strangers on opening day as those previews start. The smell of the popcorn, the sticky on your shoes and the shared excitement, thrills and anticipation you can just feel....all of it. God damn was I glad to be back. For that alone this movie was getting four fucking stars.

Now, I'm a fan of the Fast series. I legit LOVE Fast 5, 6 and 7 and think Tokyo Drift is amazing too. I sat there remembering that I'd seen the very first movie 20 years earlier at a theater 5 miles, 3 wives and 2 kids away from where I was sitting. It was surreal.

So this chapter was predictably way way way way over the top. They keep getting bigger of course. What I appreciated was how meta it dared to get, even acknowledging that physics don't apply and that they might even be invincible. Whenever the bonkers magnet action started kicking in, I was just having the best time. That's what I'm there for...

I kind of wish the trailers hadn't ruined Han's return since I would have lost it....still it was great to have him back even if it made no sense even within the nonsense world of the Fast franchise. The outer space sequence was the craziest space sequence this side of Moonraker.

I had a fucking blast and I can't wait till Monday night when I go to my favorite IMAX theater to see Black Widow. I might cry again.
