A slow burn of cinema. Burning is a potent story of class division in a politicized world (a dash of North Korean radio propaganda here, a blurred image of Trump on television there) that is also a deeply engaging thriller. Yet the assumed protagonist is not a hero, and there’s nothing really wrong with the supposed antagonist. Working class paranoia clashes against the elegance of the nouveau riche, and it simmers to a nasty boil. Masterfully shot and directed, Burning is the work of a director at the height of his powers.
Oh, and this is my 2,000th film on Letterboxd. Felt like that’s something of a milestone to be celebrated. 🥳
