    Drifting Clouds

    ★★★½

Unpretentious, quirky and darkly humorous, Drifting Clouds is another gem from the ever-endearing Aki Kaurismäki.

The two protagonists in the film are eminently likeable; a struggling working-class couple, doing what they can to earn a living against the oppressive weight of their societal rulers.

    Leto

    ★★★

Leto (Summer) is essentially a Russian interpretation of what it means to be cool. It's a rock n roll film set in the early eighties, following young creatives influenced by the musical zeitgeist making waves from across the Atlantic.

The results are stylish, beautiful, and yes; cool. As a music film, covers of prominent acts from the time (Bowie, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed) are featured along with original, lesser, compositions. It's worth mentioning that the Russian actors in the film are beautiful, which more than helps visually.

    Spring Breakers

Dreamlike, visceral and bright, Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers is a satire that soared comfortably over the vast majority of audience's heads. It's a neon collage of debauchery and a cynical, humored study of the American Dream in the modern age.

This is pure eye candy in every interpretation of the phrase; a smorgasbord for the senses. The popular reaction to the film has proved that it's harshest judges are in fact the most shallow. Spring Breakers proves that beauty can be more than just skin deep.

Not bad for a two hour video game cutscene.
