Mike Flanagan is one voice currently in cinema (and one really really really good TV miniseries) whose works really just speaks to me. Grief leaves shards in people’s hearts in different ways. The search for closure could lead one into the dark and to be confronted of whether you can be free from it is frightening, you want to believe you can but that very possibility also comes with a price. While the themes that Flanagan keeps revisiting are explored more fruitfully in his other works like Oculus or The Haunting of Hill House but I’d say applying that to a movie based on a board game, it’s a fortune we got a (more than) passable movie out of it.
