Eternals is the latest offering from the MCU and at this point everyone has heard about the critical consensus surrounding it, I was disappointed to see the negative reaction but I was still excited to watch it for myself, making sure to go in with an open mind. This is one of the harder films to review because I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it, I was fluctuating heavily with my score before I decided on it. On one hand, I feel like the world building was extremely interesting, these characters all seem quite interesting and I respect the ambition it took to actually bring this to life. On the other hand, the characters never really felt like they got the chance to be fully fleshed out and the nature of the story has it going from time period to time period, leaving it feeling a bit disjointed from time to time. I’m still obviously on the positive side of the spectrum though, it’s a long film with a lot of material to get through and while I think Chloé Zhao did a fine job, it’s certainly flawed. The cast is obviously fantastic, there are too many to even name but everyone was pretty good, I did think that while the comedy worked a lot of the time, sometimes it felt like a bit too much. That’s the divide I have with Eternals, I do think it could’ve been better but I also don’t see how that happens when so much content is needed in order to tell the story, I liked the film a good amount but I also have my issues with it, I don’t think it’s as bad as many reviews are saying but I do wish it would’ve lived up to my expectations prior to the reviews.
