Taika Waititi appears to have a knack for making highly enjoyable and funny films. He manages to imbue silly or nonsensical contexts with genuine affection and pathos. Hunt for the Wilderpeople introduces an unlikely buddy duo for the ages in Sam Neill's grizzled outdoorsman and Julian Dennison's chubby, cynical and often hilarious city lad. Sure, there are plenty of laughs and the hunt for these wilderpeople takes the occasional turn for the absurd, but at the heart of the movie is a genuine hunt for belonging that elevates it from mere giggle fare. A majestical effort.
