    A Perfect Host

    This one caught me off guard in the best way. Genuinely creepy in moments, genuinely hilarious in others. I loved the wild tone, the truly oddball character (you’ll know which one), and the absolute dedication to the absurdity of the narrative.

    It’s not a perfect film, but it does a lot right with a little, and it’s great to see a horror comedy that plays on the usually deadly serious “unwanted visitor” horror film. Worth finding and enjoying.

    I really liked this movie. It isn’t a perfect film: there are some clunky performances. But honestly, I’ll take that if it means I get an oddball horror comedy relationship movie whose tone is slippery and wild, whose narrative structure is adventurous, and whose take on classic horror tropes finds a way to breathe new life into clunky old expectations.

    It’s rare that you can think of an effective use of nonsense to make a point. Some satire is nonsensical to point out absurdity. Lewis Carroll was an aficionado of nonsense. But I’ve never seen nonsense weaponized in such a smart and prescient way as it is in Pontypool.
