It was free and I’m a sucker for gambling movies. Mendelsohn‘s incredible (of course) and almost makes Ryan Reynolds’ smug lil’ butthole of a performance tolerable.

I'm not quite sure if my overall feeling changed on this re-watch. I still feel like it doesn't quite cross the goal line for me in many ways but it was interesting how watching it a second time was a completely different experience.

Perhaps it’s fitting for a film so elusive that Abel seems to have the fuzziest of memories about the making. At the q&a I attended, when asked about what he thought of the film seeing it 20+ years later, he said something to the affect of “I was like who the fuck made this?!” And when Willem Dafoe remarked that he remembered a lot of improvisation on set, Abel said “you do?”
