    The Phantom of the Opera

I was lucky enough to watch this on Halloween night at Birmingham Town Hall with Donald MacKenzie playing the organ throughout, and it has to be one of my all time favourite cinema experiences.

The Phantom of the Opera is a beautiful ode to a bygone era and is a truly captivating film despite its simple premise. A large portion of its allure is derived from its sheer spectacle and gradeur, but its unusual atmosphere and iconic performances secure its…

"In 24 hours, Simon could be lost to us forever...."

Much like its occultism contemporaries, The Devil Rides Out isn't without its goofy elements. Nonetheless, it secures its place as one of the best films spawned during the satanic panic era of the 60s/70s. Hammer deliberately avoided depicting themes of occultism and Satanism in their earlier filmography, mostly due to fears of backlash from the church and British censors. In many ways, The Devil Rides Out is a daring departure…

The Masque of the Red Death

"I do not want to hurt you my dear, don't you understand? I want to save your soul so you can join me in the glories of hell."

A satanic Vincent Price flouncing around a castle in his Peter Pan tights, snearing at those beneath him and insisting they slither on the floor for his amusement? Ah, what's not to love?

The Masque of the Red Death is brimming with artistry, especially in the visual department, and is definitely one…

    Orphan: First Kill

Hey guys, hope you're all well! I've officially come out of hiding fashionably late for spooky season 😅 Yeah, my hiatus lasted a lot longer than I first anticipated, so I'm not very confident in my ability to string sentences together anymore, so here goes nothing....

As a pre-teen/young teenager, I had a tendency to obsessively latch onto things, which meant that my long suffering family had to watch the same damn films over and over again and Orphan was…

  • X

I'm not a fan of Ti West and from what I've seen so far, I'm not much of a fan of A24 either, but after seeing so much praise for this film I went in fairly optimistic. Unfortunately, X not only felt really vapid, but also bored me absolutely shitless.

The words "elevated horror" usually incite me with dread and annoyance, but this film excelled itself on that front and just felt like an extended exercise in stigmatising old people…

    As Above, So Below

    "This is Siouxsie, the banshee."

As Above So Below is definitely one of the strongest found footage horrors I've seen. Typically, I don't gravitate towards the subgenre, as so many directors use it as a cop out to be downright lazy (I'm looking at you The Houses October Built). Also, shaky cam has a tendency to drive me crazy.

Comparisons to The Descent are inevitable, but as far as I'm concerned As Above So Below establishes its own distinct narrative.…
