Taika Waititi is a master of filtering everything through his own unique tone. On paper, this only works half as well as it does, but his shaggy, unsentimental humor infuses the film with heart. Amazing work from the entire cast. Rima Te Wiata leaves an impression that hangs over the rest of the film, Julian Dennison & Sam Neill find unique takes on characters that could have been lifeless, and the entire supporting cast is fantastic. The biggest wonder here is how “Trifecta (Ricky Baker Song)” was not nominated for the best song Oscar. It is the perfect distillation of the film’s themes and it is performed in the context of the film. Amazing work.
