    “Mental illness spreads through genes.”
    “What?”
“It’s genetic, I looked it up.”
“Why did you look it up?”

Genuinely the funniest dialogue I’ve ever heard. As if no one knows mental illness can be genetic. This movie’s fine but like, not only does it not believe anyone knows about mental illness, it tries to make suicidal people scary. Like what?????

I always love reading Roger Ebert’s quote about films being machines for empathy. Athena is not only a machine for empathy, but it deliberately turns its characters into vehicles, dragging the camera and the audience forward into a city grieving a human turned into a political statement. It distills grief into a fiery, primal violence, which may be the only viable weapon for a system built on murder and oppression.

Every single moment is a substance and style high wire…
