    Bitter Lake

Fair warning, I'm gonna dump out all my angsts and doom in here. Don't read this if you're not in the right mindstate.

We're living through terrible times. In various ways, especially looking globally, things have always been terrible, but it feels especially dire this year. I was fairly young, but I remember 9/11. It dominated national attention for months. I can see the ways that this single event has had consequences, shifting our way of life ever since.…

    I Am Not Your Negro

As I write this review, very early morning May 31st, 2020, protests are erupting in what seems to be damn near every major city in the United States. George Floyd has recently become yet another victim of police brutality, as a cop used his knee to crush Floyd's neck for almost 9 whole minutes until he died. Derek Chauvin is a murderer. The other 3 cops who watched it happen are no better. Of course, you'd hardly know that from…

    Hooptober 7!!! -- 11/31

Wow, I had no idea this film introduced the concept of zombies eating brains. That's impressive. It's weird to see formative zombie movies now that "the rules" are so entrenched. Zombies being able to talk and do basic thinking didn't stick around the same way, but it's mostly used for the humor side of The Return of the Living Dead, so that makes sense.

And this really is a horror comedy in the truest sense --…

    Hooptober 7!!! -- 10/31

We're never going to look at outbreak movies the same way, are we? It's sad that most of my thoughts upon watching this are amazement at the rapid, strong government response. They effectively communicate up to date information on how to stay safe! No one downplays the existence or severity of the virus! No one goes out intentionally trying to infect and be infected! In case any of my non-American friends here are wondering what it's…

So, this is my 1000th logged film. I wanted to do something special for it, watch a film I’m really interested in like Tsai Ming-Liang’s The Wayward Cloud, one of the few remaining movies I haven’t seen by that director who means quite a lot to me. But it’s completely unavailable anywhere. The only source I can manage to find is an overpriced DVD on Amazon that reviews say is a bad quality DVD-R with the film burned to it.…

    I'm Thinking of Ending Things

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I wonder what it's like to watch this without having read the book. I think I can see why people find it confusing -- while the movie does more or less come out and say what's going on, it's buried between loads of absurdism, and that ending particularly seems to obfuscate the point. Much has changed, and perhaps not for the better.

Admittedly, you can't just directly port a book over to the film format without considering what each medium…
