Pure, vibrant joy. Being the no fun guy I am, I have to mention how much this movie is a beautiful lie. It's a celebration of a past that never existed -- the toothless movie industry run by people who only have noble, pure intentions. I can't help but have this on my mind at least a little bit when knowing some of the horrors that happened (and still happen) behind the scenes. But I've never been lied to so sweetly. I know in some cases I would tear a movie apart for celebrating something so untrue. Here, though, I have to let people keep their happiness. Pleasant escapism and dreams of the world as it should be must surely have their place.

And this might just be the most happy, nice movie I've ever watched. The colors are pure eye candy and, even in 2020, the jokes land constantly. It's a movie that makes use of every element of the medium; appropriately for a movie about silent film actors, there is physical comedy here to rival the greats of the silent era. This extends to all the dance choreography, which feels nearly like showing off all the time. Every song is catchy and nice, never grating. Not a single thing doesn't work about it.

All I can really do is repeat myself on the one point that matters. Singin' in the Rain is absolute, perfect happiness from the first frame to the last, not tainted by a single problem or worry. It's what people wish they felt like more often, and it's magical to see such a pure feeling temporarily captured in physical form.
