The Night House

The Night House ★★★★

First things first. Within the past five years, I’ve only seen Rebecca Hall in Christine and now The Night House. She is amazing. I would watch her read the phone book, if phone books still existed. Her scenes with the grade discussion and in the bookstore are 10/10s.

So this film had three scary jump scares and one “five hundred heads shooting through the ceiling at the same time” jump scare. The difference between these jump scares and the jump scares in films like Impetigore or It is that David Bruckner establishes a mood strung from barbed wire from the beginning of the film until... the final fifteen minutes doesn’t quite stick the landing.

My friend watches more contemporary horror films than I do, and he thought a couple of the plot devices had been used before. Well, ignorance is bliss, and this scared the living **** out of me.
