Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy 2021
A film to watch if you want to have a really long, interesting conversation by proxy. Less so if you want to actually watch a film. That said, really impressed by the way the writing manages to convey plot naturally in conversation, never dipping too far into blatant exposition (maybe the secret is in just taking the time?). Can’t help but thinking I’d rather it on a stage as opposed to a screen though. Also, the third story far outreaches the others - so if it’s losing you, at least do that one.

Midnight Cowboy 1969
Man, there’s a whole lotta different ways to be a person huh…
but we’re all the same in having regrets and losses and dreams and hopes and needs. Everything we feel on the inside might be different, everything we feel on the outside certainly is, but the fact of feeling is the same. I love being reminded of that and this film does that really well, in addition to being an absolute tour of tone and style.

The 400 Blows 1959
For me the magic moments, and what I’ll remember most of all, are the shots of those kids watching the puppet show. There’s no artifice to be seen, only their uninhibited and pure joy, shock, dismay - or even disinterest - shown all at once, each a whole present experience, a seedling psychology, stretching just moments backward and yet endlessly hopefully (yet hopelessly) forward. You want the best for all of them. In the context of the main story, it’s profound and heartbreaking.

The Stranger 2022
Yeah, if you’re going to do a true crime film (or film based on true crime) absolutely do it like that and definitely give it that score. An obsidian dark atmosphere wrought by meticulous craft on every level.

Asteroid City 2023
Watching this felt like watching Wes for the first time again, with all the sheer delight that comes with that. I think it’s due to just how meticulous this one is, even for his standards. But more than that, it revitalises the absurd, broken, existentialist tone that used to be such a cornerstone for his characters, alongside themes and ideas deep and open enough for my brain to keep picking at them days after. Something about being immersed in the detail on this film really heightened my awareness after leaving the cinema. Adored.

Tampopo 1985
You know those conversations you have with a group of friends that start on a certain topic and then become filled with diversions, sidebars, anecdotes, changes of perspective and ridiculous jokes?
This is like the movie version of that, which also makes you want ramen really really badly. -
Talk to Me 2022
Wooooow.
This was exhilarating. And on many levels too: Legit spooky. Wonderfully crafted. Lean as hell. Snappy and sexy in its style. Unexpectedly touching, emotionally connected, thematically strong and genuinely existential. And authentic and Australian in a way that really satisfied me and made everything land.
It also felt like an ideal blend of that expected higher concept a24 style horror and your straight out fright night fare. One of the best horror experiences I’ve had in ages- look, probably ever.…

Short Term 12 2013
Sometimes the phrase “getting through to someone” is far from metaphorical. In order to love you have to contend with barriers and pain, of our own and others, and then it can take on a dimension that’s almost literal, physical.
But what could be more beautiful and vital than the moments when we do make it through? This film is filled with those moments, brought to life wonderfully, crackling with vulnerability and tenderness. The cast is stacked, the script and…
