2019 Horror x 52 Challenge

04. A Horror released in 2019
Progress: 38/52

Perhaps it's because Get Out was so fresh and unique, but I didn't enjoy this one as much. And that's probably not fair, because Jordan Peele made such an impressive first film, and now I'm always going to compare his future works with that. If this was made by someone else I might have been more generous with my rating. But this one just was not as interesting to me. The acting though was fabulous - I loved all four main characters. They worked well together and were unique and memorable, often injecting the perfect amount of comic relief in tense situations.

Maybe I'm just dense, but I didn't really see a bigger meaning to this one like some people were saying. I watched some of the actor and director interviews at the end which did help me get some perspective, but I didn't fully get much from it. And from an entertainment value it felt like they were doing a lot of different things and they didn't quite click. I did enjoy the soundtrack though, and honestly, I feel like I could've just watched a full 90 minute comedy/drama of the family interacting and I would've been satisfied. I may give this another try at some point though, because I do think it's probably a better film than I'm giving it credit for. And I really appreciate the effort and passion that Jordan Peele has put into film-making so far, and can't wait to see what's in store for the next one.
