The thousands of screaming toddlers in my screening have absolutely no idea how thematically ambitious or impressively layered Toy Story 4 is. Not to mention hilariously bizarre and at times pretty haunting.
An Elephant Sitting Still is an existential epic, a vast yet incredibly intimate portrayal of soul searching in contemporary China. It’s poignant yet relentlessly nihilistic, whilst Hu Bo’s mesmerising camerawork glides through environments and in between conversations with a patient and organic flow. A devastating masterclass in gritty realism.
Call Me By Your Name is a transcendent love story, a celebration of self-discovery and the complexities of the human heart. Its two leads are endlessly captivating, beautifully portraying their fascinating characters intriacte feelings and emotions, often without saying a word.
Theres a passion and revelry to this film that only serves to fill you with an overwhelming sense of joy. You would have to be dead inside not to love it.
Using some of the most arresting animated visuals you'll see this year, the beautifully constructed Garden Party is a captivating short created by a group of French 3D artists. Cleverly juxtaposing the majestic, innocence of nature against the grim, brutality of humanity. Dark, primal and a whole heap of fun. Be sure to check out this Academy Award nominee on YouTube.
