I found rating this five stars to be a little difficult. The sexual violence in this movie is hard to watch. But the more I think about it, the whole movie is hard to watch. Much like it's main character, this movie is filthy. Another reviewer here remarked that you'll wanna shower after watching it, and it's true.
But then why then is it so fucking good?
David Thewlis is extraordinary. The dialogue is genius, and I'm shocked it's mostly improvised. The dark shots of London are a real joy. There are themes of duality, existentialism (leading up to the turn of the millennium, a theme I rather like), hopelessness, even the end of the fucking world.
This is not an easy to movie to watch. Or recommend. Doesn't mean it isn't masterful.
