I like The Deer Hunter a lot before the introduction of its stupid all-encompassing metaphor, so it's a relief to find no explicit organizing principle in Heaven's Gate (and it's easy to trash a four-hour film's lack of an organizing principle if you're looking to destroy a career), just a patient survey with some wonderfully musical images. Though I wish the actual score was a little more adventurous to match; I do like the sad Blue Danube guitar solo, less so the sad Star Spangled Banner guitar solo.
