Wow! Another win for my man Brian De Palma. The Untouchables is a tense thriller featuring stacked performances, dynamic camerawork and nail biting scenes. While I do have issues with the score, overall what more can you ask for?

Who thought it was a good idea to put Robert De Deniro and Sean Connery in the same film and have poor Kevin Costner stuck in the middle? I somehow never knew De Niro played Al Capone, and it couldn’t be more…

If you’ve seen both Love & Death and Candy, you can’t help but draw comparisons. Here’s what I remember about Candy: Jessica Biel’s hair and the Justin Timberlake jump scare. Basically, it was entirely inferior with the exception of Melanie Lynskey.

The only reason I tuned in to Love & Death was for Elizabeth Olsen. I like Jesse Plemons but not enough to watch another show about the same topic. So I wasn’t that excited when I started this but not only…

“You drown not by falling into the river but by staying submerged in it.”

Not bad for a directorial debut. Sam Hargrave’s Extraction might be a little too long but I can see why it’s getting a sequel. Despite some writing flaws, Hargrave shows he’s a capable action director with Chris Hemsworth, a capable action star.

This was a 3.0 for me until about midway. While I appreciated certain technical elements, there just wasn’t any character development. Then we get a…

I wish I thought David Fincher’s Zodiac was the masterpiece everyone else thinks it is, but unfortunately I don’t and I’ll certainly be reading some reviews to see what I’m missing. Despite a very solid cast and a few neat Fincher camera tricks, I find this film to be one of the weakest in his filmography.

The major issue for me is the length of the film and the corresponding pacing. Maybe I just don’t vibe with the newspaper/serial killer angle…

If these Mississippi crackers could see you now.”

Clearly I watched a different film than everyone else because I had a blast with David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. With a quirky, well-paced script that would make Wes Anderson proud and truly entertaining performances from a stacked cast, Amsterdam is a pleasant surprise.

    O. Russell’s script is filled to the brim with oddities. Valerie (Margot Robbie) collects shrapnel from soldiers she treats to make art, characters sporadically sing songs (such as the…

    The Little Mermaid

    ★★★½

I should start by saying I’ve always been indifferent to The Little Mermaid, so I really went to see Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid out of curiosity. This is more of a merit 3.5 as I think those who love the source material (and the kids) will really enjoy this.

While Halle Bailey is garnering some praise for the role of Ariel, I didn’t find her to be anything special (although she’s good, just not the revelation everyone else is making…
