Dolemite Is My Name ★★★★

Welcome back, Eddie Murphy.

This movie is a big and fluffy ball of charm and raunchy delight. It's about comedian/performer Rudy Ray Moore and largely focuses on the making of the film Dolemite in 1975, a film that consisted of a lot of pimping and a hint of kung fu. Movies that show the making of movies are often very intriguing to me, so this turned out to be right up my alley. I can't say I knew about Rudy Ray Moore, nor his movies, but that didn't really matter much, I was quickly sucked into his world of entertainment.

I opened with saying it's charming and fun, and that's because there isn't really that much substance here, though that's not to say it's completely void of it either. It's really just a very entertaining movie about this guy that was, for all intents and purposes, an entertainer through and through. I had almost lost hope that I would ever get to see one of my favorite actors and entertainers back on the screen in a satisfying matter, and I'm pleased to say that Eddie Murphy is a treasure in this. It almost feels like this movie is a little about him too, at times, and I can see why Murphy wanted this role. The big surprise, however? Wesley Snipes. I had no idea that guy could be this funny.
