Miller's Crossing

Miller's Crossing ★★★★★

Watch this the first time because there has to be a first time for any movie.

Watch it the second time to understand the plot.

Watch it over and over again after that because it's one of the best movies by the best American filmmakers still working... maybe, depending on the day, my personal favorite.

A crime movie where the most important mystery is never whodunnit (although those mysteries do exist), but rather the inner emotional life of the protagonist. By the time the film is over, Tom's motivations for his actions are both perfectly understandable, and completely unknowable, in the best way.
