There isn’t many films I can think of that capture a time period as well as this does - at least not in terms of nostalgic feelings anyway - I’m 18 and felt nostalgic for the 1940s while watching this because it’s done so well 😂. Pretty much every compliment that can be paid to a good Allen film is applicable here but he really excelled himself with the attention to atmosphere in this one which he builds through constant fantastic musical choices, great writing and (I’d say) unusually dynamic & pretty large scale cinematography for him. From the ensemble cast to the fantastic narration and poignant ending this film somehow manages to capture the essence of youth, family and serves as a sort of time capsule that lets us explore a beautiful bygone era and all achieved through the genius of connecting all the events by radio. This is truly an overlooked gem!
