Darren Carver-Balsiger’s review published on Letterboxd:
Pain and Glory is Almodóvar at his most reflexive and technically excellent. It's a film of motherhood, but also of love and life over many years. Regrets unspool, art becomes personal, pain is debilitating. Pain and Glory is a warm film, because it's so lifeless and cold as to feel humanely comfortable. It's a tonal masterwork, blending comedy with a slight drama hinging on contrivance. Whilst the final shot is a bit too obvious, Pain and Glory is otherwise a perfectly well-rounded film and Almodóvar at his best.
