Darren Carver-Balsiger’s review published on Letterboxd:
Update is very much post Black Mirror cinema. It's standard 2010s technophobia and screen-centric dystopia. Though it is also essentially a sleek-looking revenge movie too. Any themes are basically background noise for shallow genre antics. Despite a few twists, it is somewhat predictable. Yet Upgrade is really effective for what it is. Especially when it stops taking itself seriously. When the film enter a jokey tone, it works a lot better. The fights are fun and ridiculous, and all really well-choreographed. For a low budget movie, Upgrade certainly looks good. Plus the camerawork reflects the physical state of the lead, which is pretty cool. Upgrade is a gimmicky piece, with standard sci-fi scares about giving your body over to technology, but it's an entertaining film and very well made.
