Daver1’s review published on Letterboxd:
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again echoes The Godfather Part II in that it aims to recontextualize the present by showing the family history. Both films are ultimately about family, although Here We Go Again is probably the better film as Lily James' portrayal of Donna slightly edges out Robert De Niro as Vito. This film also gets a boost because it takes place in a wonderful universe where the only band to ever exist was Abba and no one acknowledges this fact. This is actually quite an accomplishment as I thought this wouldn't even hold a candle to the magic of the original, but it could be even better. Usually sequels have a huge quality dropoff between films (like The Godfather Part II), but that isn't the case here luckily. As of right now, I can't even come up with a single negative about Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. This may just be the perfect film.
