The French Dispatch

The French Dispatch ★★½

Just… an astonishing amount of irrelevance. Almost machine-like in its administration of pristine aesthetic whimsy. An insta-pleasurable empty husk movie to triple bill w/ Tarsem’s The Fall and Run, Lola, Run. Reminded me of that old thing where filmmakers complain that critics don’t know enough about the filmmaking process. Well now we can legitimately say that filmmakers don’t know enough about how journalism works (nitpicking and counter to the spirit of the film, I know, but I didn’t see any actual journalism here, and am not sure any of the “heroes” would’ve either). I will also say that WA’s films usually take two goes for me to fully connect, but am really not seeing it with this one…
