Matthias & Maxime

Matthias & Maxime ★★½

Matthias & Maxime feels so standard. This is extremely disappointing from the director that brought us Mommy. There isn’t really anything bringing it all together, it lacks focus. The characters themselves are pretty good and the cast do a great job (particularly Dolan himself). There’s a fair amount of humour that lands well but the emotion should’ve hit harder. The ‘big’ moments just aren’t that impactful. I don’t think this is a ‘return to form’ for Dolan, but then again I never got around to watching The Death & Life of John F. Donovan, so perhaps this is an improvement.
