The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly ★★★★

Just as its subject matter, a man who became afflicted with "locked-in syndrome," unable to move or speak, blinking one eye for communication, the film itself begins claustrophic and small, slowly moving outward through its immediate characters, finally taking kaleidoscopic flight via the memories and fantasies of Jean-Dominique Bauby.

More than any cloying hollywood inspirational story, this movie made me feel so protective and triumphant about my merely being alive and having the ability to experience all that life offers, in a physical and mental sense.
