In equal parts horrifying and beautiful, Blue Valentine puts a fresh new spin on the rom-com genre that feels both incredibly genuine and well realized. I've been watching a lot of Gosling films lately and he's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. God damn he has range and the film utilizes that to the fullest when telling the two stories. The stories are intertwined in the narrative so that we learn things in an unconventional manner that actually adds to the story, that is how you use non-chronological storytelling. The direction is absolutely fantastic, using abstract camera movement to create emotion and hiding things from the viewer to be revealed later. It's also gorgeously shot which always will work in a films favor.
