The Bridges of Madison County

The Bridges of Madison County ★★★★★

"I know you had your own dreams. I'm sorry I couldn't give them to you. I love you so much." God, this movie turned me into a blubbering mess.

Clint doesn't get much attention for his technical acumen (and indeed, in a script like this, with actors this good, he doesn't need to do anything more than to take the lens-cap off the camera each morning), but I'm in love with the lap dissolves here. There's the scene where they dance together for the first time, and he uses about 9 dissolves in it, and each time you think it's going to dissolve into them making love, but no, each time, it just cuts to them still dancing, and it's such a perfect cinematic metaphor: she really is stretching that moment so it will last forever in her memory.
