Jaws

Jaws ★★★★½

There are few film posters that are quite as iconic as that one to your left. In a simple one-sheet, you have the essence of what Spielberg was going to give us here, a man-eating shark with a penchant for New England natives. What the poster doesn't give you however is just how good that script from Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb is, and although Bruce the shark does at times look a little bit rubbery, he makes up for it by scaring the living shit out of anyone who ever wanted to go swimming in the ocean. Schneider, Shaw, and Dreyfuss all deliver, as does John Williams' remarkable score, which has become almost as iconic as the film itself. The USS Indianapolis scene sticks in my memory like few have ever done, and in Shaw Spielberg knew he had someone really special to centre his film around. I'm sure Murray Hamilton would have me strung up by my Buster Browns for docking the film a half star, but when someone can scare you in the water with a simple dum dum, dum dum dum dum, you know swimming in the sea is ruined forever.
