Yeah, so it’s just not as good as the first one! I know a lot of people think it’s better than the original, but I just think it has some story and structural issues that keep it from being amazing.
That being said, considering the issues it had in production with script leaks and what not, it’s a miracle it came out as well as it did! It’s still a great time, with some fun riffing on sequels and commentary on the “dangerous effects” horror films have on the people who watch them.
Sidney Prescott is still undefeated in my eyes as one of the best horror protagonists, especially since she goes all out in the finale, and Jamie Kennedy is still great as Randy, and killing him off in this was a big mistake.
Also, I think the finale goes on too long? Especially since the reveal of who the killers are just seems to bring the movie to a bit of a standstill even though it’s sort of the natural climax? Also Timothy Olyphant is trying really hard to be Stu 2.0, but Laurie Metcalf saves the reveal because she’s clearly enjoying a bit of scenery chewing.
So yeah, while it’s flawed, this is still a worthy sequel to the original, and it means I might revisit the other two! But god knows if I can handle Scream 3...
