my rating scale makes no sense and i know nothing about cinema
In the PBS Masterpiece Theatre broadcast, Russell Baker gives an introduction where he describes Manderley as “a house filled with dark spirits who don’t want a mistress. One of those dark spirits is dead, the other alive.”
That honestly sums up this adaptation pretty well, because the late great Diana Rigg steals the show with her powerful portrayal of Mrs Danvers. They lean in heavily on the elements of romantic love that was previously only subtext. IMO this extra edge…
It’s, uh, pretty buckwild. The many musical numbers notwithstanding, I knew I was in for one hell of a ride when Dai Maa (Mrs Danvers) tells Poonam (Rebecca) that if she won’t listen to her, she should listen to the dog. It didn’t seem to be a joke. I don’t think little Pomeranians named Cherry are in the business of giving good advice, but I digress.
Apart from giving Rebecca/Poonam a face, they also gave Mrs de Winter a name…
