Dean Walker’s review published on Letterboxd:
I really enjoyed this movie, I just feel like it’s missing something - usefully I’m not 100% sure what it is.
Perhaps they didn’t lean into the family drama enough for me, or the history of these characters. I was going into this movie expecting a bloated and confusing story, but it was simple enough, I would have liked to see more of these characters’ histories and their inter-personal relationships.
Perhaps the story didn’t end with a big crescendo like I was expecting. I found the third act somewhat underwhelming.
With that being said, a lot of this worked. The group of ten was just wonderful, all these characters were cast and written perfectly, each with interesting elements, defining characteristics and cool powers.
What else really worked is the moral dilemma at the core of this film. I have wanted a superhero movie about a challenge and not a villain for a while now and we almost got that.
It goes without saying that this is a beautiful movie too. There are some thought-out and well-done twists, just I think I’ll have to think on this movie a bit longer.
It was very un-Marvel, and I love that they took it in a different direction.
