Manhunter ★★★★

Glittering city lights, neon glow, shimmering electronic atmosphere. Michael Mann is always a vibe. In his film predating The Silence of the Lambs, he sets the definitive template for serial killer thrillers, often imitated, seldom duplicated.

The stellar cast bring the film to life, along with the banger score and Mann’s impeccable visual stylization.

It’s very interesting to revisit this after the Anthony Hopkins era, and Red Dragon specifically. That’s a decent film in it’s own right, due largely to it’s cast, but Ratner couldn’t hope to emulate Mann’s dread filled tone.
