Phenomena ★★★★

Man, what drugs were Argento on when he made Phenomena, because I think I want some? I'm not sure...

This is easily one of Argento's most out there psycho murder masterpieces (it's either this or Inferno for me), and I am here for it. Argento clearly had a million and one ideas rolling around in his head when he made this and he used every single one of them. Straight razor wielding murder apes, deformed murderous moppets, Daria Nicolodi losing her mind, multiple bug POV shots, and Donald Pleasance going on about bug ESP for way too long. The scenery is gorgeous as always. We get some lovely nature shots of the 'Swiss Transylvania' landscape and some nice modern 80's European locales. I personally am a big fan of Argento's move toward a cleaner, sleeker look in the 80's so this totally works for me. It is a thrill a minute, and I haven't even talked about the Goblin soundtrack yet! spoiler alert: The soundtrack's good.

My only real complaint is the metal tracks that are just randomly thrown in throughout the movie. It feels like something he was forced to do and they never really fit. I like Iron Maiden as much as the next guy, but it doesn't really work for me here. Also, a warning for anyone watching the version on Amazon Prime. There are chunks of the movie where there is no dubbing and Amazon doesn't have any subtitles for those parts. It's especially bad towards the end, because the dubbing drops out right when the big reveal happens. Looks like I have to get the Synapse blu-ray at some point now. Woe is me...
