    Justin Kurzel is one of Australia's finest working filmmakers. He kick-started Australian cinema's trend of exploring the neurosis of suburban colonists with Snowtown, before maximizing those themes in Macbeth. Assassin's Creed, faulted by it's budget and commercial expectation, is a severely underrated action film that tries to understand the zeitgeist behind it's wanton violence more than most of it's ilk.

  • Bad Trip

    Bad Trip


    Truly subversive and radical filmmaking, in it's deconstruction of popular cinematic language and sheer bravado. It's points of focus for satirization are astute and timely. Moreover, the film is very rarely, if ever, cruel to those being fooled, foregrounding their reasoning and humanity. It is the larger structures that are being taken down, and this puts Bad Trip a cut above the rest. Most importantly, it's hilarious, anarchic, and disgusting, and I loved it. The pace of the chaos does make for a sag in the 2nd/3rd acts, but it quickly picks up for a fun finale.
