Satantango

Satantango

Watching this film in one sitting without a break is an experience like nothing else I've ever done.
Gorgeously shot in black and white, using many very long takes, Sátántangó depicts events in an impoverished Hungarian village, such as: cows walking, rain, a little girl killing a cat, a young man stealing his sister's money, an old, fat doctor running out of fruit brandy, mysterious ringing bells, drunk people dancing and most importantly: people walking. Yes this is the best film I have ever seen. When thinking of Sátántangó, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the immensely long runtime. But what makes this film special is not the fact that it is very long but the style of the film (which results in a very long runtime). A normal film most likely only shows thing that you need to see to understand the plot or develop the characters. Sátántangó is different. There are quite a lot of scenes that could have been completely cut without any effect on the story or characters. The scene that are necessary are way longer than they need to be. We don't need to see characters walk for 5 minutes. But it's exactly this that makes the film feel so real and at times uncomfortable. The plot, while simple is interesting enough to keep me interested for 7 hours but the film relies more on atmosphere and characters than plot. The acting, directing and cinematography is of course excellent, every single character is interesting, the score is great. Sátántangó is one of the bleakest and most depressing films I have ever seen but it has a weird kind of dark humor in some scenes as well. The only issues I have with this masterpiece is that it is not very rewatchable and there are 2 scenes that feature some weird exposition.
Sátántangó is a well shot, well written, well directed, bleak, darkly funny, fascinating, compelling and devastating experience. There's no film like Sátántangó and I doubt there ever will be. The closest to perfection a film can possibly come.
