Upgrade ★★★½

Robocop + Blade Runner = Upgrade

Once upon a time, movies weren't afraid to end on a down note.
The Godfather ended on a lie that would ultimately lead to the demise of a family.

In Rosemary's Baby she gives herself to the darkness and becomes the mother of the antichrist.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest's final image is that of the main character being smothered to death post-lobotomy.

Spoilers btw.

Upgrade isn't anywhere near as good as those movies are, but it understands that sometimes stories need to have a difficult and uncompromising conclusions.

The movie that comes before that final shot is a slick, gory and occasionally funny sci-fi actioner without an ounce of fat on it. Much like its main character, this movie is on a mission and doesn't have time for anything else.

In perhaps his smartest directorial decision, Leigh Whannell bathed this movie in neon lights and an 80's inspired synth-y score. Those 2 decisions will extend this movie's shelf life an extra 10, maybe 15 years.

I can't say I'll remember it at the end of the year, but I'd have no problem recommending it to people.
