Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange ★★★★

MCU Ranked

“Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain!”

I think this is one of the most underrated in the entire MCU. It’s probably my favourite origin of the MCU characters, Stephen Strange’s journey is an interesting one, and he does get some actual character development throughout. It also helps that it’s one of the best directed MCU with some of the most striking visuals and set pieces the entire series ever does.

Benedict Cumberbatch makes a great Strange, arrogant and unlikable at first, but slowly becoming more of a warm and heroic character. Cumberbatch does play the character really well; which I never expected, he really sells the true torture and sadness that the characters goes through in the movie. Tilda Swinton, while certainly miscast; does an excellent job as the Ancient One. My only downsides to the characters in this movie is how they waste Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel Macadams in small roles that get pushed to the side.

It’s certainly the visuals that set this movie about. Every fight manages to looks distinct and has a different element of amazing visuals to it. Even the simple effects like the portals; look incredible. I also love the use of visuals within the finale, which as a whole, I think is one of the best MCU finales. No huge battle, it’s just Strange and the enemy head to head. It could have been a bit longer, to really sell what it’s trying to say, but it feels fresh and even smart compared to the big bombastic nature that Marvel often falls into. There perhaps could be more exploration of the actual villain, and the people helping him come to our world, but that’s an issue that plagues a lot of Marvel.

It works together as a standalone movie, fun, action packed, with great visuals. A fantastic casting with Cumberbatch (who gets better each time he makes an appearance in future movies), and a finale that I think is one of the best. Really can’t wait for the second.
