Pascal Laugier invites us to dig deep and find the messages that (literally) screams all over the place in this. It is contextualized as a horror film, but it's a clear picture of the kind of abuse our society has endured, like exploitation, war, colonialism, torture and maybe more, we could take into consideration minority groups perspectives. The real intent (according to the director) was to show pain — yeah, it gets pretty uncomfortable to watch at times.
