    Lamb

    ★★★★

Valdimar Jóhannsson takes inspiration from folklore across a number of mediums to create a fable that feels both familiar and fresh. To label it horror would take a bit of a stretching in my opinion, but could particularly apply if switching the perspective out from the presumed protagonists, giving it to some of the other characters of the film. It’s a wonderful picture regardless—like Rams, another Icelandic sheep-themed film before it, Lamb showcases a countryside as overwhelmingly beautiful as the…

    Pig

    ★★★★

A tremendous directorial debut from Michael Sarnoski. Pig ends up being the antithesis to that which you can't help setting yourself up for when you go into it, but its beauty is not so much in how it subverts expectation, but rather how magnificently it effects a profound emotional connection to such abstract material. Nicolas Cage has a great deal to do with this. I usually cringe when the rest of the crowd cheers at his Nouveau Shamantics, but his performance is pitch-perfect here. Pig really is quite the treat; a delightful degustation indeed.

I was immensely privileged to be able to see Nils Frahm perform live alongside thousands of others at Primavera 2018 in Barcelona. It was one of many incredible experiences I had over the few days the festival ran. The setting for this concert documentary, Berlin’s Funkhaus, is far more intimate, a sublime venue to host the neo-classical musical odysseys Nils embarks on. If you’re unable to experience him live, this is the next best thing, and in some ways actually…

    Dollman vs. Demonic Toys

    ★½

The sum total is less than its parts in Dollman vs Demonic Toys. Tim Thomerson is always great value, but this Full Moon crossover unfortunately turns out to be a non-event. Cheap and not nearly nasty enough.

    Avengers: Endgame

    ★★

If Infinity War was, as @kernetcetera so eloquently described, ‘television’, then Endgame is the TV finale, the send-off show, the goodbye episode that wraps it all up with a nice little bow and gives the fans an opportunity to pay their respects to characters that had been a part of their lives for so many seasons. On that note, it’s certainly not the type of film that was made for someone like me, and I was a fool for thinking…

    The House That Jack Built

    ★★★★★

Murder as art. Art as murder. Engineering. Architecture. Heaven and hell. The tiger. The lamb. The dark light. The noble rot.
There will be lots of words about this to come.
