From the way this film has been talked up, I was expecting nothing short of a masterpiece. Whilst the animation itself is certainly magnificent, I found Your Name to be a total mismatch for me, infused as it was with a saccharine sentimentality that frankly sickens me. It desperately needed to leave out the typically overplayed bug-eyed and wide-mouthed anime antics, which were ill-suited to a story that clearly had pretensions beyond Saturday morning cartoon channel breakfast TV. Miyazaki’s crown remains firmly atop cranium.
