Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Cinema. I love cinema and that’s what my life revolves around. To watch a love letter so poetic to this beautiful world for me is something so overwhelming and profound that it’s even difficult to explain. I just couldn’t wait to see this new Tarantino and went to another country to see it because in Cannes I couldn’t make it for its last screening for just an hour.

So, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a fairytale about the magic eternity…

I will think about this one and won’t find the right words for quite some time. A surreal experience filmed in 4:3 and black and white, an incredible and absurd tale that relives german expressionism and kammerspielfilm, an insane reminiscence of Prometheus’ myth.
Robert Eggers is a fucking crazy genius. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe deliver some of the best performances I’ve seen on screen this year. Thank you A24 for always satisfying my thirst for cinema.

There are so many criminally underseen masterpieces in Altman’s filmography and I always love to discover something new about it. This one belongs to the amazing trilogy on psychological studies/horror about women with Images and 3 Women. Robert will always be the goat director, one (hidden) gem after the other.

Tarkovsky said “Il Pianeta Azzurro is poem, a voyage, a concert on nature, universe, life. A different image from the one we always see”. And that’s all you need to read on this film

WOW! I’m shocked and astounded by this beautiful picture, undoubtedly in Noah’s top 3. A few shots even resembled a certain bergmanesque taste, and it was a thoroughout amazing, hilarious and moving emotional ride. I can’t easily put in words how powerful were the main performances by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. It’s no secret Adam is in my top three favorite actors, but this time... boy oh boy. One of the best performances I’ve ever witnessed: some details and sequences will be stuck in my mind for a really long time, his voice and his scene presence are something out of this world. I’m amazed.

As much as I studied this film far and wide back at uni, and how many things and sequences we watched, read about, discussed and analyzed, it’s incredible to think I’ve never actually sat down and watched it in its entirety in a single sitting. Tati was a master and as a unique as the genre he practically created and the influences he echoed. An artist.
