Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Not always consistent, but if you're a fan of the way The Lonely Island plays extreme zaniness with a straight face, you'll probably love it. Not quite in the ranks of goofball classics like Airplane! or Anchorman, but not far off, either. Time and repeat viewings are usually kind to this style of comedy.

The big surprise here is that Samberg's Timberlake/Bieber-alike Conner4Real is a pretty good character study: invincibly charismatic but lacking the introspection necessary to be a good writer, he's prone to sycophancy and forgoing genuine friendships for the limelight. This means the estrangement between him and his former band members (TLI's Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer) actually has a tangible weight to it, underscoring every maximalist joke with a simple beating heart. I just wish they hadn't tried to land all that good character work on a D-tier weed joke.
