In Days of Heaven, the cinematography quickly becomes the center of attention. Terrence Malick and cinematographer Néstor Almendros worked extensively to create ravishing scenes. Almost every frame is stunning, undoubtedly helping to build an incredibly lively atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the breathtaking beauty of Days of Heaven does not manage to cover up how shallow the story in itself felt. Although the unfolding love triangle is acted out greatly by Richard Gere, Brooke Adams and Sam Shepard, it was never as engaging or profound as I would've liked it to be. Ultimately Days of Heaven felt like a expertly crafted movie aesthetically and atmospherically while being quite hollow on the inside.
